The Western Route Rally : Heading for Brittany

On October 5th and 6th, 2024, during 2 days set off on beautiful Brittany roads, from Cancale via St Malo, Dinard, Saint Brieuc, Paimpol and a planned arrival at Cap Fréhel.

English cars will be in the spotlight, for this tourist rally with a paper roadbook on the test roads for the automotive press.

…Between sea sides routes of the emerald coast and the magical forest of the legendary King Arthur.

From Cape to Cape, on the seaside roads

For 2 days, over a total distance of 280 km,  the paper roadbook will take a tourist route which passes through a selection of the most beautiful roads in France: the Emerald Coast road, the pink granite coast, but also routes of the “Florio Cup” and its famous historic climb in the heart of St Brieuc. Landscapes constantly renewed by spectacular high tides, generous nature and an exceptionally rich heritage.

Departing from Cancale, a town of gastronomy and  its national label of “remarkable site of taste” , you will experience Brittany in all its forms for two days. Along  the Côtes-d’Armor  you will pass by the city of the Corsairs, Saint-Malo. Twice a day, the Bay of Cancale, Saint-Malo and Dinard is transformed into a vast natural theater and offers you the spectacle of the strongest tides in Europe. As the water recedes, it exposes an immense expanse of sand, revealing shellfish and crustaceans. You will pass by the  Pointe de la Touesse , located in Rothéneuf, a real little paradise. After Saint-Malo and Dinard, you will be on the wildest part of the Emerald Coast, behind the wheel of your old car. The postcard landscapes of the seaside then give way to mysterious Brittany and its magical forests… “The other Brocéliande” This is the forest of Huelgoat, in the heart of  Finistère . Teeming with life and legends, with nothing to envy of its mythical twin! There we meet Gargantua, King Arthur, while beneath the Devil’s Cave and the Fairy Pond whisper invisible torrents and a Silver River – an echo of the ancient silver mines. We let ourselves be captivated by the “Breton Fontainebleau” with its chaos polished by time; with a flick, we even manage to make the 137 tonnes of the Roche Tremblante move… On the edge of the forest, the village is also home to treasures to discover. Then it’s the Quénécan Forest, nicknamed “Little Breton Switzerland”, which will punctuate the journey of the beautiful engines.

Brittany and its heritage

The organizers are keen to help you discover Brittany, its history and its unusual heritage. The road will run alongside  Fort du Guesclin , this islet located between Cancale and Saint-Malo, accessible at low tide. The singer Léo Ferré stayed there and composed many songs there. A stop in a  Malouinière  is on the program, an authentic house of Malouin corsairs and shipowners from the 18th century. Then there are religious buildings like  Tréguier Cathedral  and its card game figures: clubs, hearts, diamonds… which recall its financing by games of chance. A stop at Beauport Abbey  to visit its  green cloister , its  open-air church  where hydrangeas and old roses bloom, its  breathtaking view  offered by the refectory bays  over the sea  and the neighboring islands. To continue, the roadtrip passes through “Little Venice of Trégor”,  Pontrieux , classified among the small towns of character. Finally you will discover romantic Brittany, passing by the  Château de Combourg , dating from the 14th century, place of inspiration for Chateaubriand. An unusual route which passes through Plouézec, to discover the Craca mill, dating from 1844. Built on a cliff at an altitude of 60 meters and 80 meters from the sea, it offers a magnificent view of the bay of Paimpol and the islands of Saint-Riom and Bréhat.
